October 11, 2006

week 4 assingment 1:

POST them in the COMMENTS section of this message and talk about them. Your writing should show that you have learned and thought about the 24 strengths and the role they play in your life.

week 4 assingment 2:

Go to this website.
You will see a series of 25 opposing opinions (Statement 1 and Statement2).

Copy the full group description into your blog. (Not the part where it just repeats your test responses.)
To find out what your group thinks on various political issues, go to this page.
Write in your blog about your reaction to the description. Is it accurate? How are you similar to or different from your Typological Group. What issues are most important to you, and are issues you would consider in voting for a candidate or on a law?

CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRATS
PAST TYPOLOGY COUNTERPART: Socially Conservative Democrats / New Dealers

14% OF ADULT POPULATION

15% OF REGISTERED VOTERS

PARTY ID: 89% Democrat, 11% Independent/No Preference, 0% Republican,(98% Dem/Lean Dem)

BASIC DESCRIPTION: Religious orientation and conservative views set this group apart from other Democratic-leaning groups on many social and political issues. Conservative Democrats’ views are moderate with respect to key policy issues such as foreign policy, regulation of the environment and the role of government in providing a social safety net. Their neutrality on assistance to the poor is linked, at least in part, to their belief in personal responsibility.

DEFINING VALUES: Less extreme on moral beliefs than core Republican groups, but most oppose gay marriage and the acceptance of homosexuality, and support a more active role for government in protecting morality. No more conservative than the national average on other social issues such as abortion and stem-cell research. Most oppose the war in Iraq, but views of America’s overall foreign policy are mixed and they are less opposed to Bush’s assertive stance than are other Democratic groups.

WHO THEY ARE: Older women and blacks make up a sizeable proportion of this group (27% and 30%, respectively). Somewhat less educated and poorer than the nation overall. Allegiance to the Democratic party is quite strong (51% describe themselves as “strong” Democrats) but fully 85% describe themselves as either conservative or moderate ideologically.

LIFESTYLE NOTES: 46% attend church at least once a week, 44% attend Bible study or prayer group meetings, a third (34%) have a gun in their house.

2004 ELECTION: Bush 14%, Kerry 65%.

MEDIA USE: Emphasis on traditional providers as main news sources: newspapers (50%) and network TV news (42%).

I am confused about all this because most of the times i really dont pay much attention to the elections and all that. But what i do know is that i don’t like bush as our president because he is doing alot of things that are wrong like having the soldiers away from their family and what he is trying to do to the immigrants they are comming here to get a better life than what they had in their country.

WEEK 3 ASSINGMENTS

October 11, 2006

WEEK 3: Assignment #1

We’re reading the short story “Precious and Her Hair” by Ifeona Fulani. I have a copy for you when you come in for your appointment, or check the library for the book Beacon Best of 2000: Great Writing by Women and Men of All Colors and Cultures.

WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT 2: Learn about Positive Psychology, then create a blog post about what you’ve learned.

NOTE: This is a major assignment, and you are expected to do a great deal of rading and learning — and your blog post should refect your new knowledge and understanding.

First, read this webpage: “What is Positive Psychology” This gives you the basic knowlege you need to begin further exploration. (If it still feels a little confusing, here’s a simpler essay. Try reading it, then going back and reading the first one.)

Then read this blog (and it’s a very good example of a blog.) Notice that he is blogging about things he has read. He provides quotes from and links to the sources he has read, and guides you to other websites where you can learn more. He ties it all together by telling you what he has learned and what he thinks. Your blog should do the same.

The blog above mentions three kinds of happiness in Positive Psychology. What are they? I didn’t think he did a great job of explaining them, so you need to do some googling. Remember, we’re looking at the ideas of happiness in Positive Psychology, not what Uncle Ned or the guy on the bus says happiness means — so your Google search must contain the phrase positive-psychology. Another good google phrase is Authentic-Happiness. After you’ve read more, explain the three types of happiness.

When you blog about what you’ve learned about three kinds of happiness, signature strengths and Positive Psychology, include quotes, links, referrences to other websites and your own learning and thoughts.

Re-read “Precious and Her Hair.” This time, read it in terms of Positive Psychology.

Write a 300 - 350 word essay exploring these questions and ideas. State your ideas clearly, use examples and quotes from the story and from Positive Psychology sites on the Internet.

NOTE: 350 word essays are not 80 words long.

week 2 Assingments

October 11, 2006

ASSIGNMENT 1: By now your Blog should be up. That is a requirement. Do it.

I already have my blog set up

ASSIGNMENT 2: E-mail me the URL link to your blog. I will post it here along with the others so that everyone can check out everyone else’s blogs.

ASSIGNMENT 3. Post your WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS on your Blog. Use the headline WEEK 1: ASSIGNMENTS. Be sure that your post includes the assignment as well as your answers/work.

ASSIGNMENT 4. In your blog, post the following three writings about Signature Strengths:

Writing 1:

What are other “good things” about people — personality traits like ”creative, wise, brave, honest, enthusiastic, kind, etc.” — qualities that make our lives better and which we can use to improve our happiness and success? We call these attributes “signature strengths.” List a few and — in your own words — explain what they mean.

A person could be smart in different ways not only in study wise.they can know how to do other stuff like with computers or other things. Also a personn can also have a great personality it could be one of those persons that you really want to be around. They can be trustworthy by keeping things in secret with you. They can be a great friend that when you need help in a problem they are always there for you.

Writing 2:

Think about a time in your life that you showed that you had one of these signature strengths. Think about it, remember what happened, what the circumstances were, what you did and why you did it. How did you feel about what you did, and what did it show you about yourself? Write a short essay (150 – 200 words) about this incident and what it showed you about one of your strengths.

The first time that i remember that i applied one of my signature strenghts to my life was when my best friend Maria didn’t talk to her dad, because he left then and he wasn’t showing interest in them i remember that one day during lunch in my other school she started talking about the problem that she was going throught bacause she remembered that her birthday was coming up and she was sad that she wasn’t talking to her dad so i started telling her that god gave us another chance and that it is always good to forgive others especially if they are your parents because he only lets you borrow them. And then he takes from you so you should apreciate the time that you have with then, not just let it go by that you should learn everything that they can teach you alot and that you should also enjoy the time that you have with then. And i guess that i she understood my point that she call her dad and on her birthday party he was there with us and he made the food.

Writing 3

On your blog, tell what you consider to be your five signature strengths. Briefly give examples of the role each signature strength has played in your life.

MY 5 SIGNATURE STRENGHTS

LOVE
Valuing close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated; being close to people
Capacity to love and be loved - You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you.

i think that when i care for someone is something really special because, when my dad bought me my puppy for my birthday it was something that i really loved because it came from the person that i really cared and loved my dad (also my baby natalie my mom and family)

LOVE OF LEARNING
Mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge, whether on one’s own or formally; obviously related to the strength of curiosity but goes beyond it to describe the tendency to add systematically to what one knows
Love of learning - You love learning new things, whether in a class or on your own. You have always loved school, reading, and museums-anywhere and everywhere there is an opportunity to learn.

i think that i am that type of person that always wants to learn something new when i see someone of my family doing something new i always want to know how to do it.

PERSPECTIVE [WISDOM]
Being able to provide wise counsel to others; having ways of looking at the world that make sense to oneself and to other people
Perspective (wisdom) - Although you may not think of yourself as wise, your friends hold this view of you. They value your perspective on matters and turn to you for advice. You have a way of looking at the world that makes sense to others and to yourself.

the first time that i remember that this applied to my lif was when my best friend maria didn’t talk to her dad because he left then i remember telling her that your parents is something that god lets you borrow for a while and when you have then you should enjoy them and learn from them, and i guess that i made her understand my point t hat know she talks to her dad again.

KINDNESS [generosity, nurturance, care, compassion, altruistic love, “niceness”]
Doing favors and good deedsFOR others; helping them; taking care of them Kindness and generosity
You are kind and generous to others, and you are never too busy to do a favor. You enjoy doing good deeds FOR others, even if you do not know them well.

Once when i went with my little sister to the store to buy some candies i remember that the son of the women who sold the candies had her little boy with down syndrome, when i saw him i felt something in my heart that i bought him a candy to . When i left i was thanking god for giving me a healthy baby.

FORGIVENESS
Forgiving those who have done wrong; giving people a second chance; not being vengeful
Forgiveness and mercy - You forgive those who have done you wrong. You always give people a second chance. Your guiding principle is mercy and not revenge.

I dont think that is something good when you want to have revenge against someone. You should forgive them.

Pop Celebrity Britney Spears to rap on her next album?

September 24, 2006
Britney Spears

Who would’ve think of that? According to the news, Pop Celebrity Britney Spears is set to rap on her next album. Isn’t that a shock? Apparently Britney’ producer, J.R. Rotem, has revealed her hip-hop plans and says the celebrity mum’ fifth LP is going to be “crazy” and will take the singer to “the next level”. What level is that? Britney Spears rapping? What is she trying to do, follow or support her husband? If she tries to reach another level, I’ve got a feeling this is not the way. I mean what Britney is trying to innovate? Yes indeed, the producer did a great job with Destiny’s Child and 50 Cent, but rapping for Britney will most likely ruin her imagine. Life is a challenge, I agree.

I can tell you there’s some dance stuff, there’s some slow, more introspective stuff and some club tracks. She even raps a bit. Talk rap. When she gets behind the microphone there’s a magic that comes out - and the music that we’re doing is the next level. I was blown away to see Britney record in the studio. You hear this finished result that sounds professional, but you don’t know how much of it is overproduced, how much of it is edited. But I found the actual talent was really there. So I definitely gained some respect for her.
- says Britney’ producer, J.R. Rotem to MTV
